Jan 15th 2004, the Five Spot Supper Club and Nomadic Wax productions invite you to "African Underground" the first ever African hip-hop showcase to unite MCs from all over Africa as well as like minded MCs from NYC. The event is the first of its kind and is an attempt to bring together not only hip-hop talent from all over Africa but also to unite African MCs with their American counterparts. The event will be hosted by the legendary hip-hop/spoken word poet, Toni Blackman who not only has traveled all over Africa working with MCs but also served as the the official US hip-hop ambassador under the Clinton Administration. The event will be featuring MCs from Senegal, Tanzania and Sierra Leone as well as MCs from Brooklyn, Harlem and Chicago.

Doug e Tee, c'est le nom "de guerre" de la jeune star, Amadou Barry. L'auteur de la cassette sortie en février 2003 sous le titre de A-Free-Ka. Un esprit libre. Mais, Doug e Tee n'est pas que seulement passionné, comme il le dit, d'égyptologie. Pour traduire son attachement à l'enfance, l'artiste a révélé qu'il va "encore consacrer plus de place" aux adolescents, dans ses productions comme lors de ses spectacles.

"WA BMG 44" est un groupe de deux rappeurs et un DJ, formé en 1992, amis d'enfance pour la plupart, tous originaires de la banlieue de Thiaroye, proche de Dakar. Wa Bokk Menmen guestu signifie littéralement "tous ensemble pour mieux réflêchir".
Le chiffre 44 est un hommage aux tirailleurs sénégalais rapatriés après la libération de la France, qui ont été assassinés le premier décembre 1944 par les troupes coloniales françaises pour avoir réclamé leurs indemnités de détention dans les camps de travail en Allemagne et leurs primes de démobilisation. Le camp militaire où sont morts les soldats ainsi que le cimetière où ils sont enterrés, est situé à Thiaroye, dans la banlieue de Pikine, à 15 kilomètres de Dakar d'où sont originaires tous les membres du groupe.

En ce moment le groupe est à Bruxelles pour préparer leur deuxième album, qui va sortir dans l'année 2004.

Le groupe Daara J a été le grand gagnant de la troisième édition du festival Hip Hop " Awards " en remportant samedi quatre trophées: meilleur groupe, meilleure vente, meilleure cassette groupe et meilleur vidéo-clip.

Le groupe qui s’apprête à mettre sur le marché un Best of pour fêter ses dix ans de présence sur la scène hip hop, a reçu ses récompenses en même temps que les autres lauréats au cours d’une cérémonie organisée au Centre culturel français de Dakar. Le ministre de la Culture, Safiatou Diop Ndiaye a assisté à une partie de la manifestation. Au total, treize trophées ont été remis aux lauréats dont certains ont participé au spectacle organisé pour l’occasion. Initiative de la structure Optimiste Produktion, le festival hip hop Awards a vu la participation de plusieurs artistes sénégalais et des invités venus du continent et de France. Il y avait aussi au programme de la manifestation une session de formation des rappeurs aux droits d’auteur. Le groupe Daara-J (prononcer Daara-dji) signifie école de la vie. Il a sorti cette année Boomerang, son troisième album international après Daara-J (1995) et Xalima (1998).
Groupe imprégné de soul et à mi-chemin entre le rap et musique africaine, il a été créé en août 1994 par Faada Freddy (Abdoul Fathah Seck), Ndongo D (Mamadou Lamine Seck), Lord Aladji Man (Mansour Jacques Sagna).

Après la trêve du Ramadan, le Centre Culturel Français (CCF) reprend ses activités. Concerts, cinéma, théâtre mais aussi mode et expositions se succéderont tout au long de ce mois. La programmation, riche et variée, répond à un souci d'ouverture aux différentes cultures et de leurs rencontres.

Les réjouissances au CCF ont commencé hier, 1er décembre, avec le festival Africa Fête. Partenaire de cet événement, le centre a abrité, hier, la conférence d'ouverture, sur le thème « les artistes contre le sida », et il accueillera également les rencontres professionnelles des jours suivants. Le concert de vendredi soir aura lieu au théâtre de verdure. Initialement prévu en octobre, le défilé spectacle « Forêt sacrée » se tiendra finalement aujourd'hui. Africa Créations invite le public à entrer dans « l'univers symbolique de la mode africaine traditionnelle ». Demain, le concert de solidarité « Charity show », concocté par Idrissa Diop réunira de grands noms de la scène sénégalaise au théâtre de verdure. Du lundi 8 au mercredi 10 décembre, l'ambassade de Roumanie à Dakar et le CCF organiseront la Semaine culturelle franco-roumaine.

Au programme : la projection de trois films, suivie d'une rencontre avec la comédienne roumaine Ioana Craciunescu, la présentation de deux pièces de théâtre, une exposition photo de Mihaela Marin et une conférence sur la littérature roumaine et la francophonie. Dans le cadre des Hip Hop Awards, l'un des grands événements musicaux de cette fin d'année, le CCF accueillera le concert du vendredi 12 décembre. Seront présents, parmi d'autres, le Français Stomy Bugsy, le Burkinabé Yeleen, les Sénégalais Daara J, Bat'blindés À l'occasion du Festival international du Film de quartier, du 15 au 20 décembre, des projections seront faites au cinéma du CCF. Toujours en ce qui concerne le cinéma, les spectateurs pourront découvrir, ou redécouvrir, deux films africains. Du 2 au 4 décembre, c'est « Djib », du Béninois Jean Odoutan, qui sera présenté. Il s'agit de l'histoire d'un conflit générationnel entre un adolescent, qui va tomber amoureux, et sa grand-mère. Le deuxième film, diffusé du 16 au 18 décembre, est celui du Burkinabé Dani Kouyate, « Sia, le rêve du python ». Dans la plus pure des traditions qui prévalent sur le Vieux continent, Dakar aura elle aussi son marché de Noël. Du 15 au 31 décembre, le CCF organise dans ses jardins une grande foire de Noël qui réunira de nombreux artisans et créateurs.

His songs, particullary his social aspects of his lyrics, made him a well known and respected artist in Senegal. Cooperations were done with Baaba Maal, Biddew Bou Bess amd others.

Nomadic Wax is a mobile "guerilla-style" production company dedicated to recording, producing, and developing hip-hop talent in Africa’s urban centers. Nomadic Wax was conceived by Benny Herson, (AKA Nomad), who stumbled upon a thriving underground hip-hop scene during a trip to Senegal in the summer of 1999.
In 2000 Benny returned to Senegal to write "Fat Beats, Dope Rhymes and Thug Lives" a scholarship-wining thesis documenting the rise of Senegalese hip-hop and the power of hip-hop as a means of political/social expression. In 2001 Benny returned to Dakar with no more than a hard disk recorder, a laptop computer and a couple of mics. With engineering help from ASCAP award winning engineer Dan Cantor (Notable Productions) and 14 of Benny’s dopest beats, Nomadic Wax recorded "African Underground:" Senegal", the worlds first African hip-hop compilation produced for international release. Today Nomadic Wax has successfully produced over 54 of West Africa’s most talented hip-hop groups. With the advent of portable digital studio technology, Nomadic Wax is able record on location, thus reaching artists in the most remote of locations. With the immense success experienced in Dakar, Nomadic Wax will continue in its quest to seek out and produce hip-hop talent around the world.


Nomad (aka Benny Beats) Bio:
Benny Herson (AKA Nomad) began studying music at age five. Beginning with percussion, he quickly excelled at his craft and began studying drumset. At age 16, Benny took his skills to the stage as a founding member of legendary ska kingpins Skavoovie and the Epitones. For the next 10 years, Benny toured the United States, Canada and Europe over a dozen times, released three internationally acclaimed albums and recorded dozens of singles on compilations world wide. In 2000 his drumset skills led him into the studio playing drums for reggae legends Yabby U, Sugar Minott, Glen Brown among others.
After a life-changing trip studying West African drumming in Senegal, Benny discovered a vibrant hip-hop scene in Dakar, Senegal’s main capital. Enthralled with the political and social message of the group’s lyrics he began producing and making beats for Senegal’s top MCs. After over 2 years of steady production work and beat making, Benny has become the most sought after producer in the Senegal. In only 2 years, Benny has amassed an impressive roster of artsists having produced 54 of West Africa’s most talented hip-hop groups.
As to why he has spent so much time focusing on African hip-hop talent he says, "African hip-hop is the next logical step. We’re living in an era where everything you hear on the radio sounds the same. There’s no meaning in the lyrics anymore. All over Africa there are thousands of MCs with a powerful message just waiting for the opportunity to be heard. African hip-hop is like a lyrical time bomb just waiting to go off… and it’s only a matter of time".

WA BMG 44 is a rapgroup from Thiaroye, a suburb of Dakar. Their name stands for "Wa Bokk Menmen Guestu", what litterary means "all together for better thinking". The number 44 is used to honor the repatriated laborers who were killed in 1944 by the former French colonists near their town.
Manu, Matador & DJ Wooz created a new style of music which they call "Jihadcore", hardcore HipHop Beats with lyrics against injustice and other problems in the world. Most of the lyrics are brought in Wolof, French and sometimes English.
